Simutrans Help Center / Re: How to ****emble trains / pak britain128
You should be able to create trains with both mail and p****enger compartments - there are mail variants of the teak LNER carriages which are compatible. The requirements for brake carriages are that they are placed at the end of a train (although in some sets these are also required as the first carriage as well).

This thread makes me realise the need for a guide/manual/wiki to the trains in pak128.Britain with their uses and typical carriage requirements.

Pak128.Britain / Re: Bridges
Some progress - completed steel truss rail bridge.  I decided to go with player colours for now.

Pak128.Britain / Re: Narrow Gauge
The rail tracks all now use the generic rail-snow.png (I never removed the older images from SVN).

The bridge looks great - any chance for a snowy version too?

Pak128.Britain / Re: Boats, barges and ships
Definitely overdue for some development, but after a long time, here is the SS Great Britain (some uncanny parallels with the real-life equivalent here...).  Hopefully it won't run aground in game and bankrupt me to resue it!  And just for the pedants amongst us, it's seen departing from Bristol. (not Maidenhead or any other inland town!)

Pak128.Britain / Re: Pak128 Britain query
The latest version (1.07) is quite old now I must admit, but the main reason for a lack of a new official release is the fact I've not had any time to develop more stuff.  The nightly pak is your best bet, it's not officially official, but it does have most (all?) of the latest stuff in it, and if I get some time soon, will become 1.08 without too many additions.

Simutrans-Extended development / Re: How (not) to choose a route
In a previous existence where I was involved in writing computer models of transport networks for real-life planning and investment decisions, it was fairly standard practice to incorporate a 10 minute interchange penalty.  It is also standard to apply a waiting penalty for each stop - this is usually taken as half of the time between trains on a route (so one train every 10 minutes gives a 5 minute penalty - this favours routes with frequent service, although it is usual to apply a cap of around 30-60 minutes as the maximum penalty as people will usually read the timetable when they know services are not frequent).  So the "generalised time" of a journey would be:
(in-vehicle time) + (waiting time at each stop) + (interchange penalty)  + (crowding penalties)
It is also standard to add on a cost component to these, but this is probably irrelevent to simutrans (or taken up by the comfort factor etc?).

Once you have worked out the generalised times for each journey, there are then two options.
1) All-or-nothing: Everyone chooses the route with the minimum cost
2) Probabilistic choice: Most people choose the minimum cost, others choose slower routes.  The probability of route A is given by
P(a) = exp(-cost of route a)/(sum_for_all_i(exp(-cost of route i)))

I don't know if any of this helps in the simutrans-experimental world, but I thought I'd throw it out there as an example of how it's done "in the real world".

Pak128.Britain / Re: Request for artists: High-capacity barges.
These seem to be American - in Britain the canals tended to be narrow, and in any case canal transport was quickly replaced by rail in the 1800s.  If you can find some references and ideally pictures for British barges that fit what you would like, I may draw them when I get time.

Simutrans Help Center / Re: Segfault with Linux r3760 and dev version of pak128.Britain
No - it's fine with nightly pak r320.  I wonder whether it needs all paks to be made with the latest makeobj - some of the pak files are pretty old...  Anyway, I guess that just means I need to play around until I work out what's causing the problem - it's obviously not a general problem with the pak sources being out of date.

Pak128.Britain / Re: PakBritain - to-do list
Oliver, for some reason I can't get sending you a PM to work.  Anyway it's not confidential information, so I'll post it here.

Thanks for considering drawing stuff for pak128.Britain.  At this stage, I'd say the first thing is get used to how to use blender.  I taught myself enough blender to use simutrans by following this online tutorial: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikibooks:Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro

The main skills I use are creating shapes, moving nodes, ****igning colours and textures, and rendering.  However, it is probably easiest for making pak128.Britain models if you take an existing blend file which has the correct lighting, camera and render settings already set up, and modify that (it's also often easier to create one model by modifying another as well).  I suggest you pick an object from the current set that is close to the object you want to create, and ask me for the blend for that object.  I'll send more detailed instructions on how to get from the blender model to a simutrans pak file then.

Good luck!

Pak128.Britain / Re: PakBritain - to-do list
I'd recommend using blender for consistency - and also then you can use existing buildings as a starting point.  I can send you any of the files if you want to work from these, along with some more detailed instructions about how to convert into simutrans images.

Pak128.Britain / Re: PakBritain - to-do list
Narrow gauge would be quite a large project (requiring track, depots, stations, vehicles, signals, tunnels, bridges).  I'd recommend getting your eye in with some additions for other vehicles or buildings first, and once you've got the hang of it then maybe start on narrow gauge.

Pak128.Britain / Re: New Vehicle: Optare Alero
That's definitely an improvement.  I'd still say it was a bit on the large side however - take a look at this screenshot and you'll see what I mean.  It looks larger (particularly width/height) than other larger modern buses in the pak.  Perhaps you could scale it down a tad more?

Pak128.Britain / Re: More City Cars (Modified Police Car, Please Download New Version)
The best way to test citycars is to remove the citycar pak file (BritCitycar.pak) and then create a pak file with just the cars you want to test.  Start a game, and switch to public player, then use the add citycar button to create loads of citycars (obviously only the citycars you created will be allowed).  If you build them on a circular piece of road, they will have no choice but to follow all 8 rotations at some point.

Pak128.Britain / Re: New Vehicle: Optare Alero
Having tested this in game - I'd agree with JamesPetts.  It is a bit too big, and the shading could do with improving.  Also, please use #000000 (pure black) for windows.  Nevertheless, a great effort first up, and if you do want any blender models to use / adapt to make things then I can oblige.

Pak128.Britain / Re: [New vehicles] Multiple unit extravaganza
I spotted a couple of bugs in the source here when I was getting them ready for loading into the standard release.  In the 317 and 455, the rear driving vehicle dat points at the images for one of the middle vehicles.

Pak128.Britain / Re: New Vehicle: Optare Alero
Excellent!  I've made a couple of minor tweaks to the dat file and I will upload it into the pak sources if that's OK with you (I ****ume so as you have released the sources here).

Ok this is what I get with the debugger:

Simutrans Help Center / Segfault with Linux r3760 and dev version of pak128.Britain
After a couple of months off, I've just tried the latest nightly (r3760) with my development pak128.Britain and I get a seg fault on startup:

...
Reading city configuration ...
Reading speedbonus configuration ...
Reading menu configuration ...
Reading object data from pak128-gb/...
Segmentation fault

It works fine with the last nightly I had (r3543).  I'm not reporting this as a bug straightaway as it could well be I need to change something in the pak to take account of a recent change in how the exe works, which I've missed in my absence.  Can anyone offer any clues?

Pak128.Britain / Re: [New vehicles] Multiple unit extravaganza
Not too much - just enough to show it's not completely vertical.  You may even be able to pixel edit the two views that matter and just remove one or two columns of pixels at the top.  Granted, it's a rather subtle point though...

Pak128.Britain / Re: Tram ideas
It would be great to include a cl**** 139 as used on the stourbridge branch.  Alas I have no time for the foreseeable future though!

Pak128.Britain / Re: [New vehicles] Multiple unit extravaganza
Nice work with these graphics although I would say that the 456s look like they have a vertical front end in the side-on images when in reality they have quite a pronounced slope (much more so than the 319 which I guess you used as a base?).
