Pak128 / Re: Underwater Tunnels
Someone can correct me on this, but I think the wiki was exploiting a bug that no longer exists?

However in the nighties there is a new feature that allows you to have slopes underground, you can download the newest nightly at http://simutrans-germany.com/~nightly/simutrans/index.php

All you have to do is build some underground track, then you can use the raise and lower slope/terrain tool (the same one that is used to change slopes above ground).

Just make an up slope or down slope on the last tile of track, and it should make a slope for you.   After it makes a slope, you can continue laying track at the new level.

Simutrans Help Center / Re: .patch files
Dwachs,

Thank you for your quick reply.  I didn't get it to compile, it looks like I have a path set incorrectly, but I will try to figure it out tomorrow.   This is the first time I tried compiling simutrans in windows.  If it compiled on the first attempt, I don't think it would be any fun, lol.

Simutrans Help Center / Re: .patch files
do i just put it in the patchs folder, then right click on the file and select, "apply patch" ?

I think I did it correctly.  TortosieMerge pops up with a list of files that was patchs?  Do that mean it worked, and I can try to compile now?

Simutrans Help Center / Re: .patch files
BudapestTRansport, did you actually read what whoami posted?

To use them, you need to get the source code, apply the patches and recompile all to get a new Simutrans binary.

How do I apply the patch file once I have the source code. (using VC++ express on Windows [vista])  I tried yelling "APPLY PATCH" at the computer, and pressing the "read my mind" button.   And that didn't seam to work for some reason.

Community Discussion / Re: Introduce yourself to the community
I guess I should have done this a few months ago.

Hello, I am Michael, I am from Rutland, Vermont in the United States.  In case you don't know Vermont is a rural state in Northern New England (North East).    However, I am less than five hours from New York City; Boston; and Montreal, Canada.   I live in a town of about 20,000.   We have a city bus service, creatively named "The Bus"  and we have once a day intercity train service via Amtrak (the Ethan Allan) to Albany, NY and continuing on to New York, NY.   May current profile photo is me at the "161st Street – Yankee Stadium subway station" overlooking the new stadium.

I love simutrans.  For some odd reason I have always been obsessive about transportation/infrastructure.  It use to be about freeway design, then about prasnager trains, and also Air Traffic Control.  So obviously, simutrans speaks home to me.

I really appreciate everything everybody does for this project.  I would name names, but I am afraid I might leave someone out.  But I like to thank the creators, the developers, the patch-submitters, the pak-maintainers, the painters/artist, the forum maintainers, the documentation/other website maintainers, and the Benevolent Dictators.

I wish I could do more to contribute.  I got some programing skills, however I am not as familiar with C++ and German to really understand what is going on in the majority of the source code.   Also, If I had more artist/creative skills, I would love to help start a PAK.somesize.USA project.

Thanks

Michael

Scenarios and Challenges / Re: Civil Challenge.
I have been making a save game of an US/North America map.  So far I just have cities.

I took one of the maps from http://maps.simutrans.com and enlarge it to 4000x2850,   so there are some hill artifices in it, but it is still usable.   I started this map using simutrans-exp, and anyone is welcome to use it if they don't want to spend time creating every American city.  Along with a few Canadian and Mexican Cities near the US border.

I used an approximate scale of 175 real people in any given metro area is equal to one simulation.    So realistically the smallest city I can display on the map has to have a metro population of more than 150,000 or so.  However in some cases I was a little zealous with clicking with the +100 tools, and I have not evicted any extra simutraians if I went a few 100 overboard.

Edit/PS:   Anyone is free to use this map as a starting point.  And if you want to add more cities or detail to this map, feel free to, I would love to see your changes.

Simutrans-Extended official information and announcements / Re: How to get Simutrans-Experimental
The first link is http://ftp//experimental.[ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ]/public_ftp/Simutrans-Experimental%20Complete.zip it should be ftp://experimental.[ simutrans [dot] us (site down, do not visit) ]/public_ftp/Simutrans-Experimental%20Complete.zip.  Also, even with the corrected link, I still get an empty file.    The 2nd link works, but the download is semi-slow.

Randomness Lounge / Re: What's your up/download speed?
After reading this thread I wanted to test a Virtual Private Server I have access to, but since I only have remote ssh access, I don't have access  to a web browser with flash, so I googled, "bandwidth test using lynx"  and I came across the suggesting to run, "wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test" from the command line.

So I did, and here are the results:
Code: [Select]
mwoodburn@li64-196:~> wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--08:42:35--  http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
           => `100mb.test.5'
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104,857,600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]

100%[====================================>] 104,857,600   83.84M/s

08:42:36 (83.78 MB/s) - `100mb.test.5' saved [104857600/104857600]

That is  670.24 MBps!   A traceroute shows I am only five hops from cachefly, and more than likely in the same building as them.

Randomness Lounge / Re: What's your up/download speed?

However, those numbers are a lie.  My ISP has a service call "Speed Boost"  Which allow small downloads to go really fast.  Which basically fools speed tests into thinking my internet connection is better than it really is.   I more typically get somewhere between 6down/0.5 up and 8 down/1.0 up for larger/longer downloads.

Extension Requests / Re: Clearly indicate direction of rail signals
The signal is always to the right side of travel.   If you are laying double tracks, with the trains traveling on the right, the signals should always be on the outside.   If you are British, they go on the inside of the track.

As far as your overlay request goes,  I like the idea and I fully support it,  but I do not have enough of an understanding of the simutrans-source code to implement it.

Extension Requests / Re: Stop names based on Street
Perhaps you could fake street names by ****igning names to rows in cols of the tiles within a city.   Obviously, if a street jogs, it is going have a different name, but I would think it would be easier to program than figuring out what street is what.

Extension Requests / Re: Helping p****engers find the express trains
Re: not selling tickets.   There are stops on Amtrak lines, and even NYC's Metro North's lines where on the schedule p****engers can only board or disembark from the train.

The main example that comes to mind is on the main line for the Metro North, at the Herlm -125th street station.

The metro north is a commuter service for p****engers to and from New York City, serving upstate new york, and Connecticut.  Herlm-125th street station is the first stop north of Grand Central Terminal,  and for the most part, south bond trains only let p****engers off  and north bond trains only let p****engers on the train.

I think the main reason for this is to encourage p****engers to take the parallel Lexington ave subway line just a block east of the commuter line, which frees up seats for much more profitable p****engers who are traveling to/from points further north in more expensive fare-zones.

As far as Sumatrans is concern,  I guess if you have a similar set up  where you have a commuter/intercity line that runs to stations A-B-n,  where A is a really big terminal station, with lots of p****engers,  and B is a smaller station, but also has local service connecting back to A, and n is a whole bunch of stations far far away, then it might be beneficial not to allow p****engers to use the commuter/long distance line to and from A and B.

While, this might be more realistic in certain cases,  of course their is UI clutter and coding issues, etc.

Pak128 / Re: Another Weight Limit Change Request for Pak128
40 to 50t seams to be reasonable.  I originally suggested 80 tons, because that is what the gravel road was,  but looking in the depot, I don't see much of anything that  wouldn't be able to travel in city.

Edit: Grammar/Spelling.

Extension Requests / Re: Duplicate Backwards
how about:

[Duplicate Backwards]
-- empty space --
| copy to a  |   | copy to new      |
|  new line  |   | line  backwards |
-- empty space --
[add        ]  [  insert  ]  [replace]

on top.

and then for each stop

Pak128 / Another Weight Limit Change Request for Pak128
VS or to whom it may concern,

Since weight limits issues have come up in the last couple days with simutrans-experimental  would it be possible to bump the weight limit for city roads up to 80tons?

There are some buses and trucks that weigh more than the current 25 limit, especially when they have a full load, and I find that when I have to transport goods (or even p****engers if I am not careful what buses I pick)  through a city, if I place a gravel road down (which has a higher weight limit than city roads) frequently the city repaves over my roads with the lower weight limit and I get the "too heavy" warning message.

For me it is just a minor annoyance, if someone has the enforce weight limits option set to 2, this could become more problematic, as their convoys may get stuck when the city decides it times to pave a new city road.

Thanks in advance.

~Michael.
