Title: More realism: vehicles appearing on adjacent road near supplied car dealers
Post by: emaxectranspoorte on January 08, 2009, 05:26:56 pm
Another idea I got while answering a request by Peyo (industry=era)... :)

When a car factory on a map is fully supplied and producing vehicles (it could be changed to vehicles instead of cars for this to work), if a road is near that factory (not necessarily exactly near, there can be one tile in between the two, but still quite near), AI vehicles of all types could appear nearby, that can't be controlled by any player, just like they appear in towns and/or cities in Simutrans.

Is this a bit too complex to create and/or implement, and/or can this be created and/or implemented in any way?... :-\

EDIT: I am really so sorry, everyone, I've forgotten. :o ::) I, mostly, should be talking about THE CAR DEALER (of all types) and not THE CAR FACTORY. ::) ;D I really apologize about this and/or hope I didn't cause any inconvenience.
The reason, mostly is, because of one of "someone important I know" <-- (in case it upsets any of you, in here) stories about going (about the 1920's to 1950's era) and getting good deals on vehicles at THE CAR FACTORY. ;) :) That's all. So I just was stuck on that, without realising I've forgotten... ::) :D *Note to self...* ;) :D

Hope that last EDIT makes it better... ::) :)

Uff, how to explain this?

Mostly there is some distinction between engine and data that together form a game. If you know, Unreal Tournament engine has been used in other games... like Tactical Ops for example. Simply add different textures, models, everything, and it is a new game. Simutrans is just like that - we have more paksets but one exe.

There must be some distance between the two components, or they are not two, but just one and you lose the ability to "mod" the game easily. The engine provides templates, which you fill in with data - numbers and pictures. So, the data are limited by the possibilities the template offers. To have it the other way is not desirable.

But exactly that is what you are saying. A feature of game engine - adding cars around car factory - works only if you have a car factory. Thus the game actually depends on having a car factory pak to work, which is what everyone wants to avoid.

Then you can take the one step that makes it "right" again: add "spawn citycars when not served" to the factory template, so that you can choose this for every factory. But is that worth the effort, if it will be used only for one factory out of some twenty?

What about those who park a car at home or in the garage at night or when they're off work? It's a nice idea you've come up with, but since we don't provide car parks on the streets or in front of the buildings, Simutranians are forced to buy a new car every day they need one since their car will disappear after arriving home... by the way, how do they go to the dealership? Unless most of Simutrans is changed, this patch request might stay a daydream rather than in-game reality...Just my 2 pence though...

Correct me if I am wrong; the request was:
When car factory (automotive industry) produces cars but they are not transported to resellers, they just drive away as citycars.
-> Not sure what parking lots and such have to do with this? Maybe you wanted to post it in the other thread with similar topic, where James talked about citycars that appear when p****engers don't find any transport?

PS: emax, you certainly didn't offend anyone with this.

Oh darn...I must have misread the text, sorry about that...I just got carried away with that thought about people having to buy a new car every day.

After VS pointing out that I have misread it, the patch request makes much more sense! Just something that jumps into my mind, where would the spawned cars go? Maybe they could drive to a harbor where they can be exported by ship or an airplane "off the map" (also for other overcrowded goods maybe)?

First of all, thank you all for your kind replies. :)

Yes, that's exactly right, VS. But it also applies to all types of spawned vehicles and the car dealerships, as well. :)

KrazyJay, they don't necessarily have to drive to a harbor where they can be exported by ship or an airplane "off the map", but if that's what you wish to do with this request (if you think it includes more realism) that is allright, ok with me. They can be transported for export, just like any other mode in Simutrans. Although I definitely agree with your idea about transporting overcrowded goods. :)

Oh - car dealership! I'm sorry, now I see what you meant with that. The cars can't just vanish to thin air, so it is just logical that they drive away, when sold!

Unfortunately, the reasoning is still the same, so I wouldn't expect it to be added anyway.

But now I really like this idea, too :) Pity...

Now you really undestood. Thanks a lot, VS. :)
