Title: Pushing Simutrans on Sourceforge
Post by: prissi on May 14, 2009, 08:33:51 am
I recieved this email from Sourceforge. Well,

Quote
Hi. You're receiving this message because you're an admin of a project at SourceForge.net.  Thanks for reading.

Last week, we began accepting nominations for our fourth annual Community Choice Awards. We'll be accepting nominations until May 29th, and the ten projects with the most nominations in each category will become our finalists.

This email contains a set of links for your projects that you can use to nominate them for a Community Choice Award.  After you're done, you'll be given a "badge" that you can put on your blog, project website, or newsletter to make it easy for your community to do the same.  The projects that mobilize their communities are usually the ones that win.

If you want to promote simutrans on sourceforge, you can click on the link there: http://sourceforge.net/community/cca09/nominate/?project_name=simutrans&project_url=http://www.simutrans.com/ (http://sourceforge.net/community/cca09/nominate/?project_name=simutrans&project_url=http://www.simutrans.com/)

(No idea, what will come out of this anyway ... )

It's the biggest banner ever!!  :D would be possible to make it appear more often? only until Simutrans wins...

I created four more copies so that it is selected more often.

I created four more copies so that it is selected more often.

Ah, I didn't think of that, I was trying to find a way of having it appear more, good thinking :)

Probably silly question but ...

Which "category" are you selecting?
* Best project
* Best Project for Gamers
* Best Visual Design (our artists offer this!)
or any other?
Title: Re: Pushing Simutrans on Sourceforge
Post by: jamespetts on May 14, 2009, 06:15:18 pm
I voted "best project for gamers", since Simutrans is a game: it seems the most appropriate category. In "best project" and "best visual design", one is competing with a large range of non-game applications. Simutrans has the best chance of doing well if it is voted for in the games section.

I created four more copies so that it is selected more often.
I increased to 14 because we already had 14 news items, so it will be selected about half of the time for now :) Perhaps in a few days we can go back down to 4-6 or so :)

I also sent out a newsletter.

And I'm using the news item code as my signature.

For anyone else who wants to do so, the code is:

Please nominate Simutrans for the SourceForge Community Choice Awards.

1) I voted, too.
2) This is about the nomination phase.
3) It is possible to nominate a project for several categories in a single vote. But it makes sense to always include the games category in the vote for ST.

In case nobody noticed, the nomination period ended (yesterday) and you can't vote any more. I left only one news item of these 14, since we don't want to forget totally, and according to timeline (https://sourceforge.net/community/cca09/) voting will continue in about three weeks - if we make it into finalists' round! We still have Isaac's signature as well :)

And I've just removed my signature, because it was only up for the nomination period :)

All I get from that page is:

XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.

But also going up the URL tree, same thing, so perhaps something wrong on their end?

Addendum: Happens in Firefox and IE for me...

Post-Addendum: Waiting a few minutes helped. Perhaps their servers are getting busy from time to time :)

The picture still says "nominate", but we're already nominated, aren't we? The picture in Prissi's signature is the correct one for this stage, I think.

As Isaac announced here (http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=2817.msg28050;topicseen#msg28050), the winner of Best Project for Gamers was not Simutrans but ScummVM, an emulation engine for LucasArts Graphical Adventures. The complete list of winner is at Sourceforge (http://ccalive.com/).

At this point, we must congratulate ScummVM community and all we can say is we'll see in next year's awards.. :P

Yes, let us be more polite than the Rigs of Rods community (which I am also a part of, and most of whom were nice, but not all... heh) :-)

I wouldn't have minded if RoR or Simutrans had won, but I was pulling for Simutrans (although since it's about the size of the community and motivation of members, I though RoR had the better chance between we two...)

I'd say we did pretty well. I mean the concept of simutrans isn't new and the tile based system we use is also rather previous century. So we can be happy that we've become a finalist - there are only 85 finalists out of more than 4000 participants. So we've rather won than lost.

7th Palce. I think this is a very good place, for Simutrans.

Not really 7th; 4th together with number 4,5,6,7 all with 10%.

Prissi you have to go over the 10% with your mouse. Than you can see that simutrans have: 1052 votes and the other have a little bit more.

I think both arguments are valid - 4th-7th place are extremely close - sure, we're technically 7th, but essentially near 4th... :)
