Title: [6.6] Questions
Post by: davidh on September 06, 2009, 10:10:11 am
Hi

After being unable to run 6.6 on my SuSE Linux box I downloaded the complete 6.6 windows pack onto my Vista Business desktop. The game runs just fine here; but I noticed some peculiarities that I'm not sure are features or bugs. They're all fairly minor but I thought I'd mention them:

First I started a game with the timeline on. I'd expected the game to start at 1930 and , in fact, when I went to save the game it seemed to think the year was 1930. However the calendar said it was 1830 and the lack of vehicles seemed to reflect that. Just took me a bit by surprise.

Because I didn't want to play for a long, long time with only horse transport I switched player to Public Service and fast forwarded to 1900 before switching back to Default Player. This was OK; but within a short while my industries started to go out of business. Within a few game months there were no industries left at all except for p****engers and mail. Wot? No economy? What happened to all the industy and how's the came supposed to operate without it?

Final point is a small bugette. I clicked on a sheep farm to see the farm properties (this was before they all went out of business). The farm supplied livestock and wool; but the wool amount kept fluctuating between -1 and 16383. A problem with a smallint perhaps?

Finally just wanted to say thanks to you guys for the experimental branch. Keep up the good work

David

David,

thank you very much for your feedback. The sheep farm problem is an issue with Pak128.Britain-Ex, which should be fixed in the next release of that pakset. I am not sure that I understand what you mean by the game seeming to think that the year was 1930. 1830 is the default starting year for Pak128.Britain-Ex, so I suspect that you simply mistook the 8 for a 9. If you start in 1830, you already have steam trains available, so you won't have to use horse transport for years (except on the roads, but even then, steam trams will be available before too long).

As to the industries going out of business, what happens is that they become obsolete. They should be replaced by new, more modern versions of the same industries as you play, but, if you were fast-forwarding for decades without actually transporting anything, then the usual triggers for generating new industries will not be set, so you will get a dearth of industry. You'd have been better off starting the game again in 1900 (but you'd have had steam road transport since the 1870s if that's what you wanted).

Thank you again for your feedback; I am glad that you like Simutrans-Experimental :-)

Hi James

Thanks for your reply, I realized where the confusion over the date arose when I first saved the game. I'd emptied the save directory on my Linux box and must have thought I'd done the same on Windows; however there must have been a single save of a 1930 game in the directory. When I went to save the game there was an existing 1930 save button on the dialog.

I'll start a new game at 1930 and see how it plays. Steam trams eh? Cool. Must say the Britain pak is very good, as an ex-pat living in Ireland it gives me a little bit of blighty to play with.

Cheers

David
