Hi all,
A question on the FR board has generated a question of my own...
In the create new map dialog box, the size of the map is shown and expressed in MB. If you were to create a 4096 x 4096 map, the dialog box will show that the map will be 1.2GB. However, if I create a map and save it right away, it creates an 8MB savegame.
So my question is: what exactly does the size represent?
Edit: just realised, you can't create a 4096 x 4096 map in 102.3-2954, but a 4096 x 1024 will generate a 1.2 GB map.
Edit2: hmm, if I quit, and restart Simutrans, it now says a 4096 x 1024 map will generate a 326MB map...
I thought it represented RAM usage.
The size is an average guess about RAM consumption of those maps. For very large maps they usually overestimates the size, as they have on average 50% water. If you switch trees off, the actual size will be only one third.
Savegame size does not count, as the size of savegames is strongly compressed. Furhtermore, an empty and a developed map do not differ much in memory consumption but their saved sizes may be three times, due to all good packets, that need to saved (and compress badly).
Ah yes, I didn't consider water... while Simutrans said the map would use 1.2 GB, Windows was reporting just under 800 MB of memory usage.
Thanks for the explanations!
Oh, that's good to know. Btw., is there any way to switch Trees off permanently?
It's probably the only Option in 'New Map' Window that doesnt get saved. My 'Solution' was switching the Trees to translucent-Mode, disabling would be a better way, especially if they use a good Chunk of RAM.
Transparent trees would only increase the load on the CPU for displaying. YOu can remove all tree.*.pak from you pak folders and you will never get trees any more ...
I take that as a 'No'.
Oh well, thanks for the Tip anyway.
Prissi told you that to permanently disable trees, you can remove the files named tree.*.pak... So that would be a "yes", not a "no".
Is Prissi's Solution better than the one I used and will it disable all Trees in new games? - Yes, definately.
Is there a way to disable Trees in all new Games(= saving the Status of the 'no Trees'-Checkbox) without breaking old *.sve's? - I ****ume the Answer is No. And that was what I thought and meant in my last Post.
Have you tried? Imho old savegames should load even without the tree pak's.
Oh, it actually works. Forget my Complaints and thanks again ;D
