Hello, Simutrans team! Total noob here, sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I don't know if it is intentional or not, but the nightly builds of Simutrans are picked up by the Ubuntu Software Center. This is where my family discovered the awesomeness that is simutrans, but the first time I installed it -- it crashed in the first 10 minutes of gameplay with a popup message. I explored around, found the forums and such, and uninstalled/reinstalled the game. It works better now, but there is a bug with saving games (they save, but when they reload there is a complaint about -1 elevations or something like that). I think, perhaps, you may be losing people by pushing nightly (instead of stable) builds to the Software Center. I don't know how they get there. I can understand why because it's easy to uninstall and reinstall for testing. Is it possible to post both a "stable" and "nightly" to the Software Center?
Just a request -- the inablility to save, right now, is not a big deal at my house because it's so new to them the kids love to start over. But I can see where there may be frustration coming -- and I'm sure older kids would give up and uninstall it right away.
Just a suggestion!! I'm learning how to do iMac builds, then maybe I'll learn how to build on Linux, so we'll be stable soon. Thanks for your time and consideration. And thanks for such a great game!!
Well, did you try latest Stable Version?
It's usually found on the official Website: http://simutrans.com/download.htm (http://simutrans.com/download.htm).
I do not think that *we* (i.e. people active in the forum) pushed ubuntu to use almost the recent trunk version.
Can you provide a link, where one can see which version of simutrans is in the ubuntu packages?
Ourselves, we provide only downloads hosted on sourceforge.net. There is a great number of places that sometimes redistribute simutrans (and often stall their version at something five years old), and all of them are absolutely not under our control. Apart from that, we know that Simutrans is included in Debian repositories.

It says Ansgar is one of the maintainers, so let's wait for his word - he is registered on this forum, too.
Ansgar, I promise I am not trying to sigle you out!
Thanks for the replies, I understand. Gouv, I'm learning how to use the latest stable release, but there are a lot of people out there who would just delete the game and move on. And I consider that a petty crime!
This is basically version 102.0 (March 09, ~700 Revisions behind trunk). So nothing related to nightly.
Hmmm... how would one tell he is using a nightly, anyway?
March version had "nightly build" in window title. probably that's the case
Yes, that is the case -- it says Nightly Build in the title. I thank you all for the information -- if it is 700 builds behind then my concern is empty. I'm going to chase that link to Ubuntu and see where it takes me.
Thanks very much!!
You can see the versions provided by Ubuntu on http://packages.ubuntu.com/simutrans and those provided by Debian on http://packages.debian.org/simutrans or http://packages.qa.debian.org/simutrans. I usually only provide packages that are based on the same source as the stable releases here (102.2 is one or two commits later than the stable release, but there were only translation updates which I though would be nice to include).
Both Debian and Ubuntu do not update packages in after release (except for serious bugs and security issues), but I provide some more recent packages for Simutrans in the pkg-games PPA on Lanchpad (https://launchpad.net/~pkg-games/+archive/ppa). They are identical to the packages in Debian unstable, but are build for earlier Ubuntu releases.
Regards,
Ansgar
