I've begun to draw some new ships for the early 20th century period.
This is the first candidate, a steel/goods ship based in the Black Osprey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Black_Osprey).
It still needs some work -more details and some texturing-, but I'll try to arrange some free time for it :)

Windows look kinda strange to me, other than that a good piece of work.

The height should be cropped somewhat for final renders since the hull is not floating on surface. That is not relevant much, so I'll just say - very nice!

Thanks. Windows will be redesigned as they look too big. Anyway they will be finally repainted with Shades, so its color may vary.

Sure. It's already a bit cropped. This preview should be for the "empty" image. It will be cropped a bit more when rendering the "full" image, so it shouldn't look like floating too much :)
What I didn't thought of is opening the cargo bays; maybe I give it a try, I'll see.

Call me crazy, but current look feels a bit too much even for empty. Maybe it is the isometric projection playing tricks with my mind... how does it look straight from side?

But that's not really bad... must be my eyes. Or maybe lack of higher structures on board?

Anyway, cropping from bottom is cheap. Let's not dwell on that now, it could be eventually the last step...

Maybe you're right. I haven't checked sizes of objects on board, but at first sight the bridge looks too small, and even the cranes do :S

Note that it's scaled as IRL, but I usually make ships wider (50% extra) to make them fit better the pak style, so its aspect may change.
In the big render you can appreciate some more detail (and issues!!), just did it for fun :)

I would remove the letters. They're hard to read and imho, they don't add anything special, at least as thin as they're now.

Yep, I had thought of that... actually the text is on a different layer because of that :)
Moreover, it was supposed to be used for steel and bulk cargo, so that text makes no sense anyway.

I will make a full set of ships for the open version of pak128. I've begun with these two steel haulers:

The render of the last one is simply awesome! I'm lokking forward to see them finished..  :)

That may take a while. I won't build the sources until I have some models complete. I want to make enough tests and see how the ships are seen into the game; so I want to have enough ships (and different) to see if the scales are adequate, and such things. Trying to decide this with only 1 or 2 ships drawn is quite difficult and risky, so I'll wait until we have enough material to take such decisions safely :)

The Edmund Fitzgerald and Willemette Chief are enough to make me wonder if we shouldn't have pak128.USA ...?

Those ships are great - If you do some generic/British ones I may have to pinch them for pak128.Britain*!

I've always been a little surprised no-one has really tried a pak128.USA.  I think there have been a few half-hearted attempts, and there are some pak128 scale american bits lying around on the archive forum, e.g.

I've already worked a bit in the next ship. It's another early p****enger cruiser, mid-sized (capacity for 250 p****engers) steamer, from Germany & Nederlands, I think. It's name is Freya and info can be found here:

Now I will create models for the Queen Elisabeth 2 and the Zenith, so there will be 3 small and 3 big ferries. Once them are finished I'll try to make paks for all them and decide about width, weight and capacities.

I've made a little break with p****enger ships (they're though!) to draw some goods ships. The first one is inspired in the Stoyko Peev, and available from 1985. Here's a peview (click to view in real "in-game" size).

Now comes the time for another ship: the «Patagonia» goods ship. Available for the period just before the last one, exactly from 1951 to 1986.
Here is a small preview (click the previews to enlarge images up to real-pak size). The one on the left is the "full" ship, with deck cargo bays closed and cranes down to deck level. The right one is the "empty" ship view, with deck cargo bays open (and empty) and cranes up. Hope you like it!

After these two goods ships, it's time for a fishing boat. It's based in the Nororn, an artic fishing ship (a small fish factory) built in 1988 in Norway.

Btw, let me introduce a new web site (actually it's a blog) called Zeno's Simutrans Creations (http://simutrans-creations.blogspot.com/), where I will be posting all the new vehicles that I paint. The site is meant to be a private collection of all my addons and other contributions to the game, with some extra information and using an adequate layout for it (as I think the forum is not the right place for that). zeno, you got such good looking images on your blog, it's sad we can't see them that way in game. such images and a few line of text would make the depots much more userfriendly for new players, since they new immediately what they're buying. (and get some eyecandy).

Thanks sdog. Bigger images look nicer until you get used to them, but I guess they won't be included in the game (and I really think they shouldn't: it's called pak128 because of the tile size!). That's one of the reasons I had to write that blog :)

Oh, it's explained at the end of each article. No ships have been released yet. They will be released when a minimum consistent pak is completed.

Hi again, I'm getting slowly back to work with ships, as long as I'm starting to have few (very few indeed) free time to spend here :)
This time I worked in a bulk ship, which isn't very detailed (I think in simple concept :p), but I feel is nice enough to consider it finished.
Its name is MV Lake Illawarra, it's Australian, and it sailed between 1958 and 1975, when was sunk in the Tasman Bridge disaster.

Btw, I've three more ships on the desk, which are a cooled goods ship, a tanker and a car carrier. I'll start with them as soon as I have some more time.

But there is need for ships to transport wood, grain and wool/cotton. I don't have any reference/idea to make those ships, if you have any, please make suggestions here. I've only thought of making only two ships for all these, one for wood and another for farm products. Maybe I could use a remake of the steeler Edmund Fitzgerald for the wood transport... What do you think?

When searching it's probably good to replace "wood" with "lumber" since that is the least ambiguous term (imo). I got at least some useful images that way...

Ok folks, after a boring sunday, there's a new ship for the pak ;D

This is the MV New Zealand Star, a refrigerated cargo vessel built in 1967 and broken up in 1993. It can be used to fill the timeline gap of the second half of 20th century.

Sorry, can't see the last link; it looks like broken or somewhat happened with it... btw these are quite old, it will take me a while to get to these ones, as 1900-1950 and 1950-2000 are the two main gaps in which I divided the needed timeline. Once done, I'll get to older ships :)

You should also take a look to this one, I bet you like it: The Zoroaster (http://azer.com/aiweb/categories/magazine/ai142_folder/142_articles/142_235_nobel_zoroaster.html); it was supposed to be the first oil tanker in the world. But it looks strange to me such an earlier steamer (~1870) ...  >:/

Back to the lumber carriers...
Just found a couple of nice images here (http://www.webplius.lt/solchart/index.php/en/fleet/9-mv-arctic-sea), the images on the middle (the clickable ones, which are larger). These are great pics, and show the cranes that vilvoh noted... they're really nice! ;)
I'll make a version for this ship, but probably bigger than the real one (it's only 97 meters long).

Hmmm.... I just wanted to illustrate that old ships for wood look like ships with some wood on them :P

Actually that's what I did with the steel hauler Edmund Fitzgerald, just filled gaps with steel bars ans planks...
But as always I like to have a real vehicle to use as inspiration ;)

Hi back, there's a new ship for the pak! This time is a tanker for the 1959+ timeline gap, named Nordic Heron and able to carry up to 650 m³ of petrol.

Yep, it's an old design I had, which has been completely re-textured, and resized to fit the pak scale... you never miss a detail! ;)

After the briefing, these are the most urgent gaps I need to fill:

• One ocean liner, for the timeline gap after 1933
• A ships/barges for lumber transport, for aprox. era between 1920 and 1960
• A bulker for the gap before 1958
• A bulker for the 1982-2007 gap
• An old fishing ship for the gap before 1964 - Could we use MHz's existing one?
• An early tanker, for the gap before 1958

Oppinions, suggestions, etc. are welcome :)

edit: I'd like to point out that there are at least two scales to ship transport - you could call them naval and river. These do not have to be so strongly separated, but there is definitely a need for small scale transport, too. "Old" 128 suffered from this really strongly with ferries...

Two new ships added to the repo. The early tanker (British Premier) and the early bulker (Eaglescliffe Hall), which has also a lumber version. You can see the articles at my blog:

With these two ships and all the versions (reffited ships) we have an acceptable timeline for all cargo ships, from 1920s to the end of the game. Now the most needed are ocean liners, specially modern ones, and later on some ships for the gaps between 1870 and 1920.

When looking at your ship pack, i suspect a conspiracy between you and Prissi:

There's no denying, the both of you are about to introduce disasters and catastrophes into the game! Just look at those ships, most of them sunk, some taking whole bridges with them.

No, no way. But you have to consider that ships that sunk or collided with bridges are the most popular, and obviously is easier to find information and websites talking about them.

I'll paint now a couple of ocean liners to finish the p****enger timeline. I promise there will be no Titanic! ;)

Some of them are already available in the current nightly (http://nightly.simutrans-germany.com) version of Pak128: oil wagons, a couple of EMUs and TGVs. Ships might be included soon also (but this will have to wait until last weeks of this summer).

Just joking :P There are a couple of ships missing yet, but I guess they will be done next week. Anyway, I will wait for the pak mantainer to come back to include them, so forget about the nightly until mid/end september.

OTOH, I may consider releasing a custom Addon set of ships. But I'm sorry it won't be in next weekend, no way :(

Of course, some years it is similar also here, in Czech republic. I think that grapes would be very good regardless of crazy weather conditions. The first grapes would be harvested around of name-day of me - it means on the 28^th of September.

I am only looking forward to seeing them in game very much - and for quite long time. Next weeked (21^st and 22^nd of August; if you got I think weekend of 14^th and 15^th of August, I am sorry for I did not write it better) I am going to celebrate (haha; because I have not ever done it) my birthday.

I wish I had an idea and enthusiasm to do anything for Simutrans again. Then I would give people playing pak128 any other addon - as gift to my birthday.
