Tips (Growth, profit etc)

hi Everyone,
I discovered this fantastic game about a week ago so I'm still a bit noobish lol. I finally figured what I needed to do to transport people, freight and create networks. I was wondering what your tactics are and if mine are good to start with.
Normally I start with :
-1 Setting up bus-lines in cities
-2 Connect cities with each other by bus

After that I don't really know what to do, when should I build planes and trains? Are they profitable and wich should I use on long distances, trains or plains?
And Another question, but thats kinda offtopic... When I build boats they don't seem to be able to pick up any oil (It is the correct kind of boat). When I order it to go to the oilrig it doesn't fill itself with oil.
