Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) users, please test a possible backport

Hello all,

I've created a backport of the simutrans 102.2.1 (the version available in Ubuntu Lucid 10.04). However, I don't run Karmic myself so I cannot test if everything works as expected.

Could you guys help me do the testing?

PPA to add in your sources.list:

Code: [Select]
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wesleys/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/wesleys/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

You then need to add my key to your keyring:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys D3980885DB72184B

Then run sudo aptitude update and

Code: [Select]
$ apt-cache policy simutrans
simutrans:
  Installed: 102.2.1~ds1-1
  Candidate: 102.2.1~ds1-1
  Version table:
     102.2.2~ds1-1 0
        500 ftp://ftp.nl.debian.org unstable/main Packages
     102.2.1~ds1-1ubuntu-bpo1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net karmic/main Packages
 *** 102.2.1~ds1-1 0
        990 ftp://ftp.nl.debian.org testing/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     102.2.1~ds1-1 0
       -200 http://archive.ubuntu.com lucid/universe Packages
     100.0+ds1-4 0
        500 ftp://ftp.nl.debian.org lenny/main Packages

You should now be able to upgrade/install simutrans by running:

Code: [Select]
aptitude install simutrans
# or
aptitude install simutrans=102.2.1~ds1-1ubuntu-bpo1

# In case you want to go back to the original karmic version:
aptitude install simutrans=102.0-1

Please test to see if everything works as expected. Please report your findings here or in the backport request/bug report.

Many thanks!

Ps. If this is not the correct forum for this post, feel free to move it.

Probably you should rather use the ansgar distribution, which was explicitely tuned for debian, including path etc. It is usually quite close to the trunk. 102.2.1 has some serious bugs, I would rather use 102.2.2.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunatly I cannot backport versions which are not in the Ubuntu repository. That is a requirement/demand from the Ubuntu backport team:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

Quote
Only packages currently in Ubuntu's repositories are eligible for backporting. We do NOT take packages from Debian repositories, unofficial repositories, user contributed sources, or REVU.

I could ask for a sync request with Debian unstable to Lucid and backport that version, that would be an option. For now I cannot do much about it.

And regarding the agnus thingy, where can I find that?

It's not agnus thingy, but Ansgar Burchhardt :D He's the hero responsible for Simutrans in Debian repo...

My projects... Tools for messing with Simutrans graphics. Graphic archive - templates and some other stuff for painters. Development logs for most recent information on what is going on. And of course pak128!

Aha, sorry for that :)

But I'm using his Debian package to backport.

Debian (Ansgar) creates a Debian package from source.
Ubuntu syncs every 6 months with Debian (for each release there is a seperate sync).

So my backport is the same package as Ansgar created for Debian. There is no difference, other then it builds on Ubuntu (and can be used on Debian like systems, provided the dependencies are/can be met).

Hi,

I already filed a sync request [1] for the latest stable release of Simutrans.  Could you wait with the backport until the new version is available in Ubuntu?
There is also a backported package (simutrans, simutrans-pak64 and simutrans-pak128.britain) available in the Debian Games Team PPA [2].

Regards,
Ansgar

Angsar, I'll put the backport request on hold till the sync request has been completed. Will subscribe myself to the bugs/sync requests.

I will still need testers to test the backport.

I think we are a bit too late.
From my backport request:
Ok, excellent; ACK from Backporters.
