Edit OK both popups appeared after I built depos at the two buildings so all is good.

My map has a power station and a coal plant that both say "owned by another player" when clicked on. In the map view, the industry connections line shows the coal from the coal mine going to the power plant and another farther away power plant; there isn't any steel mills yet in my 1930 map. But shouldn't I get at least a normal popup when I click on the coal mine -suppliers, consumers, workers live in, max.... ?

Building depots on factory ground should not happen. I you succeed in doing so, this is also an error.

All is good. The depos I built were on road(gravel) adjacent to the factories and I think because I had paused the game at the start that the game just hadn't caught up. I reloaded to before I built the depos and the pop ups were there. Sorry for wasting your time on this.
