Uhmm..it's quite strange. There're several possibilities:
a) Make sure that the executable is in the same folder as the pakset folders.
b) Make sure you have downloaded and unzipped the right pakset files

Some of them seem silly actions but we must cover all possible situations, as this kind of situations is due to silly small details.. may help if you post a screenshot of your Simutrans folder.

Hi

When I followed vilvohs instructions I ended up with files/directories in the wrong structure.  It didnt work first time.  All the unzip etc was very confusing.

But I think I just moved a directory and it works sweet now.

...in reply to the thread, not posts above:

After discussion a couple of years ago, most paksets now set up their archive to contain a "simutrans" folder. What you should be able to do is to save all the archives (i.e. executable and one or more paksets) to a single folder, then right-click and "extract here" (depends on your software), and it should all go to the right place. Most paksets even agreed (per VS in a post below) to make sure they only write inside their pak directories, so it should be as easy as:

1. Put all zips in one folder

2. "Extract here"

That should create a "simutrans" folder in the directory of the archives. Inside that simutrans folder, you should find the simutrans.exe to run - and you can pick a pack from the screen that appears.

Hope that helps :)

EDIT: to add information from VS post below

The latest (actually quite a few months old) agreement was thst paksets must NOT install anything outside their folder. So the order of installation should not matter. Of course only in case everyone honours this rule.

My projects... Tools for messing with Simutrans graphics. Graphic archive - templates and some other stuff for painters. Development logs for most recent information on what is going on. And of course pak128!

Ah, that's a good development and good to know. :) I'll modify my post a little to reflect that.

Hey Guys,

I am trying to get Simutrans working but have been getting a fatal error during the start of the program. Hopefully someone can help me; it happens as follows.

I click on the executable in the folder and it asks me to choose a pakset because I have both the 128 and 128.britain. When I choose a pakset it begins to load but is quickly stopped by this message:

FATAL ERROR: stadt_t::init()
Can't read cityrules.tab
PRESS ANY KEY

Then when I hit a key it just closes up. Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

Sharpy

This has nothing to do with tutorials, I'm afraid. Can a mod move this part of the topic to a new topic in Help Requests?

Please post in the right forum!

Can't read cityrules.tab

This file can be found in several places:
1) In your simutrans directory under MyDocuments (or something similar on your operating system)
2) In the config directory of your chosen pak in the simutrans directory where the program itself is situated
3) In the config directory of the simutrans directory where the program itself is situated

One of the three is unreadable. Try to temporary rename one of the files (preferably in the specified order) and see if this helps.
