Waypoint management

Hi folks,

I have some ideas to improve the waypoint user experience that I'd like to share:

1) A "Waypoint list" window (like the station list or vehicle list) would be nice. It should show every waypoint with the lines using it, and wheter it is disabled (e.g. when the waypoint is used by a street line, but it is not on a street). Disabled waypoints should be marked red.

2) Furthermore it would be nice to show the waypoints on the map, like the city names.

3) It should be possible to move a waypoint easily.

4) Waypoints should be identified by their position, so that by moving one waypoint, every line that uses this waypoint changes accordingly.

5) Whenever the "line management" window is active, waypoints should be shown on the map.

6) Showing of waypoints should be "toggleable" in the "display settings" window or by a short cut.

What do you think about these ideas?

Hmm, I rarely use waypoints. I only need them sometimes when Simutrans does not seem to "know" the intended route. As such a waypoint (in my view) belongs to a line and is rarely used in more than one line. But everyone plays the game differently of course!

Main disadvantage of your system is when you have a waypoint used by two lines and you want to move the waypoint for only one of them. That's not possible.

In short, it's a lot of work to program, it has its disadvantages and it does not seem that useful to me (but that's a personal opinion). So I would prefer the programmers to spend their spare time to other more useful things.

I agree that it would be a lot of work.

I don't really use waypoints (like you), but I think the reason for this is that they are not really easy to use.

If I do have multiple lines using the same waypoint, then I do that for a good reason: to be able to move that waypoint for all of them.
If you want different waypoints for different lines that would still be possible, you would have to choose a position that is not the same. I don't see a problem with that in 99 percent of all cases. However, one could identify waypoints differently, so that the user can create different waypoints at the same position, if she wants that.

This is already possible with the "stop-moving tool". Contrary to its name, it can also replace a waypoint by another, for all schedules.

However, if the sharing of waypoint is unintentional, then unexpected changes will happen.

Shared waypoints are very common in railway design if you are using fast and slow running loops at intervals to allow freight trains to be overtaken, ie because you are running mixed speed traffic on a simple 2-track route. I hadn't realised we had this functionality, though - it should prove handy.

This is really neat, I didn't know that! Now, if there was a way to show the waypoints on the map, that would be very welcome. Thanks for your answers.

Well, as a workaround, you could place a sign (and signs can be shown or hidden) on the tile.

I never realised that! Although there is a certain logic to it, that's really one for the reference manual! Well spotted!
