Rail Signal help [pics included]

Hello there.

I have been trying to work out how to theoretically get a 2 (and more) trains to go to stations A -> B -> C -> B -> A

If you could perhaps briefly tell me which signals I need and where?

Thanks, greatly appreciated. :)

Doing it the way you have done it doesn't work very well. You need to do it like i have done it below.

So make the trains come from the depot to station A B and C on the left rail and have them go back to station A on the other side. (or the other way around if u want :D ) So then they are going in a circle like this.

(You will also have to place the signals like i have for the system to work :D )

you need a directional (one way) choose platform signal between all 3 stations where you have 2 tracks.
on the bottom rows, have both signals face the screen and on the upper rows have the signals face away from the screen, or vice-versa.

Just in case - please forgive if you know this - to place a one-way signal, you plop a signal, and click on it again - it toggles between two-way, one-way going one way, then the other way, the two-way again.

Also, I realize you've just provided an example here - Have you designed a really really high traffic system and you're just asking generally about signals? Or do you literally have just the three stations?

Just to try and make sure we tailor our answer more closely to your signal needs. :)

Hey thanks, but I couldn't see the images you inserted. Could you perhaps upload to photobucket or something? :)

Oh yes, God .. I have a m****ive system but I want to have two tracks and the signals have turned it into a headache. Why can't trains just use common sense! Lol.

Two years ago, I played on a version of simutrans where multiple trains could use the signle track without the need for any signals. They could also go into the same station (even if another train was there)! It's almost as if they didn't recognise any other trains on the system. I would kill to have that version again. This one is driving me bonkers.

As far as I know such a version never existed (or it must be more than 6 years ago). Although signalling can be very complex, in your case it very simple. On the end of every double track (note: not quadruple track) you put in a one way platform-choose signal. With end I mean the end of the intended travel direction. If those double track parts are very long you can put in extra normal one way signals (in the same direction of course). Don't make the quadruple track very long though (maximum about 50 tiles).

I would not recommend the setup from the screenshot. Unless you have trains that don't go through the middle station but turn around instead. Even then some different setup might be better, but if all trains go through, you should keep both directions strictly separated from each other and then only use the choose signals for the 2 remaining tracks in each direction, not all 4.

It took me a while to understand your remark, DirrrtyDirk (and that's my fault, not yours!), but you are absolutely right. There should be no connection between the two upper platforms and the two lower platforms of every station.

Actually it wasn't really well written by me, but I didn't have much time. But if you managed to figure out what I meant, all is well (enough).  ;)

Ahhh that's where we aged ones have it over you youngsters. I remember very well when all trains including freight trains would just run through one another as if there was an over and under link.

@Fluke. Don't give up, signals are quite easy once you've got the hang of them.
I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it

Yep, there was a time when Simutrans versions started with an "8".  :)

I tested in my games what recommended DirrrtyDirk and sometimes I have train frozen say that not find the path because he wants to go to stations that are not in its direct path. I had to join them again.

He probado en mis juegos lo que DirrrtyDirk recomienda y a veces tengo trenes congelados diciendo que no encuentra la ruta porque quiere ir precisamente a las estaciones que no están en su camino directo. He tenido que unirlas de nuevo.

Then you probably made a mistake when you placed the stops in your schedule, or used the reverse-button for the way back.

A saved game might help

or used the reverse-button for the way back.
Yes. It saves me a lot of work.

Now I have no game saved for display.

Although not quite remember, I think it was when the train came and found the station where the mark was empty, he preferred that station but was not in his path to the others that if they were on their way. I think at that moment the selection signal was not working but I'm not sure about that. I tried not enough to secure.

Anyway, if both of its path are full, choose one of the other lane and there is no way to change his mind once a station is freed from his path, I have to eliminate the signal of selection and put it back At that time selection changes.

Si. Me ahorra mucho trabajo.

Well, on double tracks without connections between the tracks, you cannot use the reverse button, as it will place the stop on the wrong-way track (on the opposite side of the station) on the way back. If you insist on using it, you will need all the tracks connected - but that will mess up traffic flow. Your choice to make basically...

This conclusion i was coming.
Still does not solve the second case.
Any advice?

A esa conclusión estaba llegando.
De todas maneras no resuelve el segundo caso.
¿Tienes algún consejo?

Hi,

I wanted to show some examples to provide a solution for this problem. However, I am restricted in uploading images. Could you tell me how I can upload some images?

I generally use one of these two station types in a situation like above.
