Save game loading?

So it seems that, the compatibility problem with loading save games from say 7.2 has still not been corrected from 7.3 in 8.0; trying to load comes up with some message about string being too long "27016 should be 128" after which the game promptly crashes with a cl****ic exception error.

Was it not intended that compatibility for at least some older save games would be provided?

Junna,

it was indeed intended that there would be compatibility with 7.x versions; however, there were quite a few bugs in version 7.2, later fixed in 7.3, which might be the cause of the difficulties. Which versions of saved games are you having trouble loading?

The save game is from 7.2 (though originally it was first saved with 7.1).

I'm having a problem loading my savegame from 7.3 (git from 8may) with the 32bit build on linux. The savegame was created with 64bit.
I can't attach the savegame because its over a MB but I can mail it if you want.
I'm not actually bothered by this but thought I should mention it.

Here's what it says:
FATAL ERROR: fabrik_t::rdwr()
no besch for FishPort1945

Aborted

Junna,

can you upload your saved game to files.simutrans-germany.com for testing? Sorry that you're having trouble.

Steffen,

that error sounds like a problem with the pakset: are you sure that you are using the exact same pakset in both?

If you're using a home compiled version from the -devel branch or the 8.x branch, or indeed any branch other than -master (you mentioned Git), you may very well have ended up with an incomplete version that will not be compatible with anything other than games saved with an earlier version or games saved with that exact incomplete version.

You were kind of right, turns out it was because initially I hadn't installed the files from the config download. The loading works now, but the other things I wrote about in other threads still happen.

I could do this, but I doubt it would be any help as my pak128 is 231 mb and I have edited the configuration file(s) (the old one it was created with as well as the new 8.0 one [did not forget to replace with new one]); is it possible that the configuration file has something to do with the issue?

Junna,

the configuration file shouldn't have anything to do with the issue (****uming that you mean simuconf.tab, forestrules.tab and/or cityrules.tab), as the relevant values are saved with the game. I'm going to have trouble trying to diagnose the problem without a saved game.

I guess the compression ratio is pretty good, so the size wasn't nearly as dreadful as I was fearing.
